John Sandy’s love of art began at an early age in Scranton, PA. He loved drawing and would copy cartoons from comic books and newspapers. His interest in painting continued from childhood throughout high school. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science from the University of Richmond in Virginia, he pursued a career in public service and consulting. During this time, John challenged himself to paint on weekends. In mid-career, at the nudging of his wife, Kathleen, John enrolled and studied art at the University of Maryland. While there, he coincidentally met William B. Lawrence, a nationally known painter and sought-after teacher. Lawrence was a major source of inspiration, as he continually challenged John to go beyond the urge to paint like him or others and to find his own motif. John now paints full-time, exploring new approaches, techniques and mediums. He is currently focusing on an abstract style that combines the clear composition of geometric abstraction with the intense color and unitary forms of color-field painting. John’s work has been shown across the country, including a solo exhibition at the United States Department of Treasury. Several of those paintings are now in private collections and have become the launching point for subsequent sales across the United States, including California, Colorado, Marlyand, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. In July 2015, he accepted an invitation from the Telecommunications Industry Association in Arlington, VA where he had an installation of twelve paintings. John has also participated in several group exhibitions, including at the Strathmore in North Bethesda in 2014–2015 and in 2013–2015 respectively, at the Capitol Arts Network in Rockville, MD and the Goldman Art Gallery in North Bethesda.
