kevin frank
For the past three decades, Kevin Frank has developed a reputation as one of the most highly sought-after contemporary encaustic painters in the United States. The process of painting with encaustic, which involves applying layers of molten pigmented wax to a stabilized surface, has its origins in Greco-Roman burial portraits. As a gesture to this history, Frank limits the palettes of some of his paintings to pigments that were only available in ancient Greece. Frank, however, does not limit his subject matter to portraits; he also lends his encaustic mastery to urban scenes, landscapes, and still lifes. Due to the nature of the medium, Frank often uses stereo photographs to visualize his urban and landscape subjects in three dimensions, transforming these spaces into beautifully composed and illuminated scenes. Frank’s choice of technique and medium requires immense technical ability and quick brushwork, resulting in intriguing and fluid textures that add layers of motion and dimension to the work. Since earning a BFA in drawing and painting from Carnegie Mellon University in 1983, Frank has painted as well as maintained a full-time job in television graphics. He has worked as a graphic designer for NBC Network News and Entertainment including Saturday Night Live and for both The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien and Late Night with Conan O’Brien. Frank is now based in the Hudson Valley, New York.
